Welcome to the Greenpeace Urwaldpostamt!
The Greenpeace Urwaldpostamt (Ancient Forest Post Office) is a project
of Greenpeace volunteers on the conservation of the “Fantastic
Seven”, the world’s remaining seven large ancient forest
regions. Forest destruction does not only rob the foundation of the existence
of plants, animals and humans in forest regions. We, in industrialised
countries have to cope with climate change as a consequence of deforestation.
Forest destruction accounts for one fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions.
Protection of ancient forests does not only mean the protection of species
but also of the climate. Eighty percent of pristine forests are already lost.
However, forested areas of the size of a football field are being destroyed
every two seconds. The deforestation in the Amazon, the Kongo Basin and in
Indonesia has to cease by 2015 in order to avoid a climate chaos. The primary
goal is to keep the temperature rise safely below 2 degrees Celsius. Furthermore,
the behaviour of consumers in Germany has to be reduced according to the “ecological
footprint” to a socially compatible level.
The Greenpeace Urwaldpostamt calls for making deforestation and its consequences public in order to awake in more people the awareness of the need to take action. Moreover, decision makers in politics and corporations have to be compelled to see more personal accountability in their actions. Each and every word or picture addressed to responsible persons in politics and the economy signals resolutely “We put up a fight”. In addition, the Greenpeace Urwaldpostamt makes sure that through direct protest letters and creative actions reactions for forest and climate protection follow the joint protests.
